Census in 1890 Shows Increase
The census in 1890 showed Missoula County to have a population of 14,411, an increase of 11,874 in a 10-year period. Missoula County at that time included all of western Montana. The population of Missoula in 1890 was estimated close to 6,000. Roswell’s newspaper directory of 1888 estimated Missoula’s population at 1,250 at that time, which would indicate an increase of nearly 5,000 in two years.
