Filipino Students Ask Island Liberty

Indorse Mission to U. S. Seeking Independence From Control.

The Philippine mission to the United States to seek recognition of the island dominion is indorsed in a set of resolutions adopted by Filipino students at the University of Montana. The resolutions follow;

Whereas it was never the intention of the people of the United States to acquire the Philippines as a policy of colonial expansion; and

Whereas, it is, and always has been the definite intention of the people of the United States to withdraw their sovereignty over the Philippines as soon as a stable government is established as provided in the Jones law of 1916; and

Whereas, the Filipinos have already established that stable government; and

Whereas, the Filipinos desire absolute and immediate independence; and

Whereas, the Second Philippine Mission, a representative body of Filipinos from every walk of life, has come to this country to plead again their cause for independence; therefore be it

Resolved, that we, the Filipino students of Missoula, Montana, do hereby endorse the Philippine Mission, its aims and purposes, to-wit, the absolute and immediate independence of the Philippines,

Resolved, further, that a copy of this resolution be sent to the following newspapers; The Missoulian, The Missoula Sentinel, The New Northwest, The Great Falls Tribune, The Butte Miner, The Montana Record-Herald, The Anaconda Standard, The Miles City Star, The Bozeman Chronicle, The Billings Gazette; and to each of the congressmen representing the state of Montana at Washington,

Signed, at Missoula, this 23rd day of May, 1922,

Sixto Laraya, Felipe Valderrama, Felipe Cortez, Augustine Suguitan, Marciana Lazo, Pedro Mario, Felimon Ramos, Simplicio Dionisio, Roberto Ocampo.

The above article appeared in The Daily Missoulian on May 29, 1922.

The independence of the Philippines is a complex topic. Although it gained its independence in 1946 with the Treaty of Manila, the U. S. continued to interfere in its government for a long while. You can read about it at the following link:
