[1] Campbell Field at the Corner of S. Higgins and South avenue was named for Douglas Campbell, brother of William (Lefty) Campbell who appeared in photo above of the 1942 State American Legion baseball champs. The field was donated to the city by Campbell’s father, John who was a well-regarded Missoula attorney. A Helena Independent Record article said the following on March 13, 1944: “A campaign to change the name of the Missoula Ball Park in honor of PFC Douglas K. Campbell, Montana Marine killed in action at Tarawa, is under way. The park, originally named for State Senator John L. Campbell, the marines’s father, would be called “Doug Campbell Park.” John L. Campbell Sr. arrived in Missoula in 1911 from Minnesota & was very active in Missoula athletics (mainly baseball) as well as serving a record 6 terms as a state Senator.
