Strange Mammal Or Fish Is Seen In Flathead Lake – (1937)
Kalispell, May 24. – (Special)
A large animal, believed to be a “sea monster” by those who have seen it, has been reported by five persons living around Flathead lake.
The animal was last reported by two persons at Rollins, it was said today by Eugene McCarthy, police judge and justice of the peace.
“The two persons were good, honest, reliable people,” Judge McCarthy said. “They noticed the large object swimming in Rollin’s bay and trained their binoculars on it. Until the object raised his head and looked around, they thought it was a beaver or otter. He swam closer to the shore and then dived under, they told me.”
According to what they reported to Judge McCarthy, the animal is about nine feet long with a head like a horse’s head. It could not have been a beaver or an otter, the judge said, because it had a long neck and was too large for either.
Before it was reported by the Rollin’s couple, three other persons had told the story of seeing the animal. One person reported having vied it near Angel point.
