Steam Gives Diesel Help Over the Hill

During the changeover from steam to diesel power on the Northern Pacific, the steam locomotive often helped out when the diesels didn’t function properly. The Mainstreeter is shown being pulled across Marent Trestle, 226 feet in height, after leaving Missoula. After this run the fireman of the diesel complained because the steamer spread soot and cinders over the diesel’s windshield. (Courtesy of R. V. Nixon)
