Section E Pg 17 Missoulian Centennial Old Buzzer, Light Go
Old Buzzer, Light Go
The police department abandoned its bell, buzzer and light system in 1940 for radio equipment. In 1951 installation of a frequency modulation law enforcement radio network was completed.
Prior to the installation of radio equipment, the station communicated with “beat men” by either using a buzzer or the old red signal light on the Western Bank Building. The airport had a bell system by which it could notify the police or fire department.
On North Higgins
Officers said they were able to see the signal light from anywhere on North Higgins avenue. During World War I the light was taken down and its connections were used.
The buzzer was used by the desk sergeant to call in beat men. This became elementary when FM radio equipment was installed. It enabled police officers to talk with one another rather than having calls relayed through headquarters. Not only could any point in Missoula be reached, but any point in western Montana.
