Missoula Symphony Orchestra Get Start in October 1954
Twenty-five musicians met in October 1954 to form the nucleus of a community symphony orchestra.
Mrs. J. Castle Thornton became the first president. Prof. Eugene Andrie has conducted the orchestra since its beginning.
The Missoula Civic Symphony affiliated with the American Symphony League in December 1955. In 1956 the Symphony was accepted as a member of the American Symphony Orchestra League, enabling the Missoula group to draw upon the ideas of about 1,000 large and small community orchestras in the United States that were members of the League.
The orchestra’s members are in all walks of life, ranging in age from teens to adults. Their contribution to Missoula is a message all can understand, no matter what language is spoken.
Current officers are Mrs. R. H. Jesse, president; Mrs. Leonard W. Brewer, vice president; Mrs. N. D. Robinson, secretary, and Mrs. Gilbert Porter, Treasurer.
