State Toll 4.53 Per Cent [Soldiers who failed to return WWII]

Seventy-seven in the Army or Army Air Corps from Missoula County lost their lives during World War II. This includes all military personnel who were killed or died, or became and remained missing, between the President’s declaration of war Dec. 8, 1941, and the final date of the War Department report, Jan. 31, 1946.

According to these figures compiled by the War Department in 1946, 33 were killed in action from Missoula County, four die of wounds, 26 died outside of combat areas, 11 were determined to be dead under Public Law 490 and three were missing.

Of the men and women in the state who participated in World War II with the Army or Army Air Force, 4.53 per cent failed to return. This figure represented .59 per cent of the Army’s total dead and missing.

A state summary of war casualties furnished by the Navy to include those who served in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard and were regarded as casualties between Dec. 7, 1941, to the end of the war indicates that 308 from Montana died in the war, nine were missing, and 418 were wounded.

Information relative to World War II and concerning Missoula County is sketchy, as all records under the Draft Act of 1940 have been destroyed.
