U Registration 1,400 in Early 1920s

In 1920 the annual expenditure per student was an average of $600.

Salaries in the instructional department totaled $265,817.40. The total for the instructional, clerical and physical plant purposes was $341,451.49. Registration was 1,400.

Student expenses and spending were considered the largest item in the list of monies brought into Missoula, directly and indirectly, through the University. From all angles the University was viewed as a million dollar institution.

Serving Orchard Homes for 40 Years

 

The Hawthorne School, on South 3rd street in the Orchard Homes was completed in 1910 to serve as the seventh school in School District 1. An addition containing four classrooms and a gym was constructed at the Hawthorne site in 1953 to accommodate the growing population of that area. This photo was made before the addition was constructed.
