Half-Century Ago It Looked Like This

There were only a scattered few houses east of Higgins avenue on the South Side in the University area when this photo was taken about 1910. The University campus, isolated from the rest of the city, had four brick buildings, including the new library (the Law School for many years). At right is the athletic field and the combination gym-bleachers. At right center near the Van Buren Bridge is the former athletic field and baseball field for many years.
