Sensation of 1913

This rare photo shows Walter Beck, pioneer Missoula airman, piloting his two-winged flying machine in his historic flight of September 1913, when he became the first person to fly an airplane into the Garden City. This flight occurred only a few years after the Wright Brothers had made their historic successful flight.

First Plane to Fly Into Missoula

This is a picture of the first airplane to fly into Missoula and of the man who accomplished the feat. Walter Beck, third from right, made the historic flight in September 1913, coming into the city from near Milltown through Hell Gate Canyon. Howard Edwards, Joe Zuber, and Ralph Stiff are believed to be second, third and fourth from left, respectively. (Courtesy of L. J. Croonenberghs)
