North Higgins Pavement Laid by Crews in 1912

Mayor John M. Evans presides at a brief ceremony in 1912 marking the start of laying of bricks on North Higgins avenue at the East Railroad intersection. Earlier, in April of that year, Mayor Evans tossed the first shovel of dirt into a wagon at the corner of Front street and Higgins avenue to mark the start of the paving project. The building is the Grand Pacific Hotel, now the Park Hotel. (Photo courtesy of Stan Healy)

Late – Model Auto in the Early 1900s

Proudly chugging north toward the bridge on South Higgins avenue in a Fourth of July parade of the early 1900s is this decorated “late-model” car owned by Joseph M. Dixon. In the background is the building of the Garden City Business College in the 100 block on South 4th street west. Oddly enough, E. T. Aasheim, who runs the Modern Business College of today, is the current owner of this building, now the Babs Apartments. He bought out the business college, but never operated it on 4th street, buying the building years later. (Courtesy of Robert E. Jones)

Observing the visit of Capt. Meriwether Lewis and his party to Missoula July 4, 1806, these members of Aerie 32, Fraternal Order of Eagles, on July 4, 1915, garbed themselves as did the early day travelers for a Fourth of July parade in the Garden City. (Courtesy of Aerie 32)
