Before and After Higgins Bridge Went Out
These (2) pictures show how the Higgins Avenue Bridge looked in 1908 before and after the big flood struck in June of that year. The view from the north was taken from the roof of the First National Bank building. The picture of the flood-damaged structure was taken from the bridge deck on the south bank.
Hazardous Crossings After Flood
After the flood of June 1908 only pedestrians could cross the Clark Fork River until a new temporary crossing was completed in October. At first only the damaged Northern Pacific Bitter Root Branch rail trestle was available and it was hazardous. A swinging bridge was constructed to connect the undamaged portions of Higgins Bridge to allow pedestrians to cross at a safer and more convenient location. These photos were taken by N. A. Forsyth of Butte.
