European Hotel on Woody Street in 1890s
This is how the corner of Woody and Spruce streets looked in the 1890s. The structure on the corner now occupied by the Marsh, Powell & Livingston building was the European Hotel, which had 40 rooms. Its manager was Miles Mix. Woody street at that time was the main north-south thoroughfare of the business district, with the Northern Pacific passenger station located at its north end. Class of 1899 Went to School in Union Block
Crowded classrooms have been a problem much of the time since the first schools were opened in Missoula. Because of lack of space in the Central School in 1898-1899, this eighth grade class went to school in the east corner of the Union Block, now the Radio Central Building, in the 100 block on East Main street.
