U Expedition Sent in 1897
The first expedition sent out by Montana State University returned to Missoula in early September of 1897 after about three weeks of gathering examples of Montana resources for use at the University.
Heading the party was Prof. M. J. Elrod of the Biology Department. He was accompanied by W. W. (Chick) White, known as an expert fisherman, and Prof. F. C. Scheuch and W. O. (Willie) Craig. The party collected many specimens of frogs, snakes and fish, many insects and about 65 plants. It was estimated that the faculty members had collected 250 plants during the spring and summer of 1897. Faculty members said there were about 1400 species in the state at that time.
Rattlesnake Ice Said ‘Purest’
If you were interested in buying pure Rattlesnake Creek ice before 1900, Otto Siegel would deliver it to you. He advertised that his ice was the purest ice in western Montana. It was delivered to families regularly every day, by the week, month or season, at “the most reasonable prices.” All you had to do was telephone 126 in Missoula.
Cigar Makers Picnic
The cigar makers’ picnic of June 1891 was on the south side of the Clark Fork River in Hell Gate Canyon “where there is plenty of grass and shade.” A dancing platform and booths were constructed for the affair.
