Missoula Turns Out for U Cornerstone Laying

It was an exciting day for citizens of Missoula when the cornerstone of University Hall was laid in June of 1898. There was a parade from the business district to the campus, and those not officially in the procession joined on the end and marched past the mostly vacant lots of the South Side to the site of the ceremony. The construction shacks in the background were those of Henry Partoll, who had the contract for the foundations of the first two buildings constructed on the campus. (Courtesy of E. S. Healy)

First Two Buildings on MSU Campus

University (Main) Hall with its clock tower and Science Hall were the first two buildings constructed on the Montana State University campus, completed in 1899. Old Science Hall, as it’s known now, was the heating plant in those days.
