Horse Racing Great Sport of 1890s
Horse racing provided great sport in the 1890s.
The events were held at the Missoula fair grounds and the grand stand was often filled mostly with women. Five events took place and often there were complaints that they did not follow each other close enough.
The horses varied from thorough-bred to cayuse and the purse held as much as $450. Winning horses had names such as McGinty, Sorrel Jim, Jack the Ripper, Hell Gate, Black Fly and Skalkaho.
