Horses Recalled By Copper King
Marcus Daly, the copper mining magnate, ordered all his race horses recalled from the eastern circuit to his Bitter Root Stock Farm near Hamilton early in September of 1897.
He explained that he was tired of having his horses running out of the money and that he would confine his racing activities to the Montana racing circuit. Daly said maintaining a racing stable in the east was expensive and not worth the money unless his horses were doing better. He said he had spent about $500,000 on the eastern experiment.
He said he would sell many of his horses at San Francisco in 1898, keeping a small stable of the better horses for the Montana circuit.
