First Wedding

Marriages were great social events in the early days. One of the earliest, if not the earliest, was the marriage of George P. White to Josephine Mineinger.

Henry Brooks, justice of the peace, performed the ceremony March 5, 1862, in Hell Gate.

The couple built the “White” house near Hell Gate and had three boys, Richard, George and William and two girls, Rose and Lillian.

The first church wedding was that of Emma Slack to W. H. Dickinson. The Rev. T. C. Iliff officiated. The church was the First Methodist, the first church building in Missoula.
