Early Missoulian Paper, Buildings

This is a reproduction of the top of page 1 of one of the early issues of The Weekly Missoulian in the first year of its life after it had been renamed and moved to Missoula from Cedar Creek, where its predecessor had started.

Below is a drawing of the first office and shop of the Missoulian on West Main street. The drawing was made by Charles Schafft, at that time clerk of Missoula, for Frank Keim, early day printer. The structures showing in the background are barns and sheds on the McCormick property.

W. J. McCormick purchased the plant in 1871 with W. S. Scribner. Judge Frank H. Woody, first editor of the paper after it became the Missoulian, and T. H. Chisholm bought the plant in 1873 and moved it to Missoula using the wooden building shown for their start.

[Charles Schafft’s drawing is available on the internet. The reproduction of the early Weekly Missoulian is not very readable since it is so small.]
