David Pattee announces the opening of the Custom House, Frenchtown. The well-known reputation of Mr. Pattee and his lady as caterers to the public will ensure for them a liberal share of patronage.
Many stories of sagacious dogs are told, but John Bartz, Quartz creek has a dog that lays over them all. The dog comes regular to the claim and bow-wows for 12 and 6 o’clock, and never makes a mistake. This shows that he can count the strokes of the clock. But last winter when he had no clock he told Lion to wake him at five o’clock, and the dog did it, never varying over three minutes by the watch. He probably knew the time as chickens know when to crow. But the most remarkable thing Lion does is to run on errands. His master will whistle for him to come to the diggings and tell him to bring the saw, hammer, chisel, nails, rifle, pistol, or any thing he wants, and the dog gets them. Lion can be sent to the post office, store, butcher shop, or any other place on the creek, and he attends to his business in dog-goned good style.
