Latimer misspelling
Latimer misspellling is an insult
In March 1992 I was driving along Palmer Street and came to an intersection where street signs said “Palmer” and “Latimor” streets. Since the other signs on Latimer Street are spelled correctly, I went to the city engineer’s office and discovered that the spelling on the map had been changed, in red ink, to the incorrect one. The clerk looked up the Manitoba subdivision in Book 1, page 65. Sure enough the “e” had been changed to “o,” and in red ink. The city engineer was not in the office so I wrote a letter to him but have not had a response. Now the new west side fire station is being built on Latimor Street.
This street was named for John R. Latimer, who was a pioneer in the valley and one of the founders of Missoula. As his granddaughter, I resent the misspelling and think it is an insult to his memory. I have his signature for proof and would appreciate action being taken to correct the situation.
