J. C. Penney Co.
Founded in Missoula 1915 – 45th Year Bringing First Quality to Missoula
The J. C. Penney store in Missoula was founded in April of 1915 on East Main Street. It was moved to 127 N. Higgins in 1928. In March of 1942 the store was damaged by a $50,000 fire and the interior was completely remodeled. A $250,000 fire forced Penney to move to a temporary location at 618 S. Higgins where business was continued for 18 months. The store was then moved to its present location. In 1958 an annex was completed next door to house Penney’s family shoe store. The beautiful exterior of the store shown above houses one of Missoula’s finest department stores, offering a complete line of soft goods, home furnishings and fashion goods.
