Entertaining Indians – Jan. 4, 1901 Edwards Fruit Grower and Farmer

Members of the Treaty Commission at St. Ignatius Mission

Yesterday at St. Ignatius mission on the Flathead reservation a dinner was given to the Indians by members of a government commission, whose aim it is to secure from the Indians of the Flathead nation a treaty ceding certain lands of the reservation to the government. For the past few days the Indians have been the guests of the commission and will be for several days.

The exercises are arranged to gladden the hearts of the red men in an attempt to remove the natural aversion of the race to parting with an object for a fair consideration. It is the third of the feasts that have been given by the commission working on the present treaty, who have expressed the opinion that headway is being made in the arrangements to secure the land for the government, but much more must be accomplished in the way of removing race prejudice before the final end can be accomplished.
