Early Log Building at Ft. Missoula

This is one of the early log buildings erected at Ft. Missoula, which never was to be fired upon by enemies. Ft. Missoula was one of the first military posts established in Montana and was occupied by various departments of the Regular Army, starting in 1877. The fort of today is used for Reserve and National Guard activities.

 

Battle Fought on Rough Land

This swampy and bushy terrain was where the battle of the Big Hole was fought. Years afterward remains of rifle pits could be seen. Capt. Charles C. Rawn reported the men charged here in good style despite the difficult ground.

 

Indians Capture White Man’s Weapon

Old cannon captured by the Indians from the soldiers on the Big Hole battlefield when the Nez Perce were led by Chief Joseph and the soldiers were under Gen. Gibbons. Chief Joseph fought against an opposing force which numbered about 2,000 men to his 89 warriors.
