Clark Fork’s Waters Red – Blame it on Unions – 1968
Clark Fork’s Waters Red
The Clark Fork River, which has been beset by pollution problems since the Anaconda Co. strike began last July, again is running red, according to Keith Seaburg, information officer for the Missoula District of the Montana Fish and Game Department.
Seaburg said recent high winds in the Anaconda area have caused waste materials from the Anaconda Co. settling ponds to flow into Silver Bow Creek which forms the headwaters of the Clark Fork River.
The Fish and Game Department said that reports of trouble have been received off and on since March 24, depending on wind conditions. The department is continuing its daily monitoring of water samples from the river.
The Clark Fork received a heavy dose of pollution last August when the striking unions secured an injunction preventing Anaconda supervisory personnel from operating the precipitator plant.
