Landmark for Many Years
This flour mill later purchased by the Montana Flour Mills Co., was constructed between South 3rd and 4th streets in the 900 block for W. A. Clark in 1901. Visible for many miles across the Missoula Valley, this 80-foot structure was a landmark for many years until it was destroyed by a spectacular blaze in 1949. (Courtesy of Jack A. and J. W. Dunn)
Early Arrival in Montana
This millstone, made into a monument on the grounds of the Montana Flour Mills Co. at Great Falls, was installed by Major John Owen in his Burnt Fork Creek near Stevensville in 1856 to grind wheat for early residents of western Montana.
It is believed this stone was produced in Belgium, then shipped around the south end of South America and on the Pacific Ocean to the Columbia River, then up the Columbia into Montana. (Courtesy of Montana Flour Mills Co.)
