MMA Meeting Conducted Here in ‘98
A two-day meeting of the Montana Medical Association ended at Hotel Florence the night of May 26, 1898, with a banquet preceded by a business session.
Elected were Dr. B. F. Sandow of Neihart, president; Dr. J. J. Buckley of Missoula, first vice president; Dr. T. A. Griggs of Butte, second vice president; Dr. B. C. Brooke of Helena, secretary; Dr. Warren of Warm Springs, corresponding secretary and historian; Dr. Barbour of Helena, treasurer.
The retiring president was Dr. G. T. McCullough. Butte was selected as site of the 1899 convention. Dr. J. F. Spelman of Anaconda was in charge of the convention banquet.
MOST COSTLY $6,000
Fire Chief R. S. Mentrum’s report for the year ended April 30, 1892, listed the April 5 fire in the Northern Pacific Hospital, caused by a defective flue, as the most costly of the year.[i] The building was destroyed and the loss was set at $6,000. The expenses of the department for the year were listed as $2,828.
MAHLER BUILDS BREWERY
Alfred Mahler built a brewery in Missoula in 1870. He later went to the Black Hills, became rich, and died in Denver in 1879.4
A large downtown fire occurred in Missoula in August of 1892. Maurice Higgins was killed at the time.
