Cities Tallest Building Finished in 1921
Missoula’s tallest building, the Smead-Simons Block, was completed in 1921 to house a theater, swimming pool, café, 50 offices and 12 apartments. The structure has eight stories above the Higgins avenue level and two below. W. H. Smead and W. A. Simons were the builders of the $400,000 building. Ole Bakke was the architect and G. D. Forssen the contractor. It later was renamed the Wilma Building for Mrs. Simons. The swimming pool was operated for several years, closed, then reopened in the 1930s for awhile. It now is under the floor of offices in the basement. (Missoulian-Sentinel Photo)
Needle Rock, landmark Lewis and Clark saw when they stopped for baths in the warm water, has been seen by many thousands of Montanans, visiting Lolo Hot Springs south of here. This photo was made about 1900 when there was a wooden ladder to the highest point from the adjacent formation. (Photo courtesy of Jack A. and J. W. Dunn)
