Local Eagles, Started in 1899, Emphasize Welfare Programs
Missoula Aerie 32 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles was established Oct. 22, 1899 with 54 charter members. The first president was Frank Peck who was also president in 1902.
The organization provides benefit, social, civic, and welfare programs. Its welfare program strives for passage of workman’s compensation, mothers’ pensions, old age pensions and similar measures. Currently Eagles are urging legislation extending Social Security protection to workers not protected. Members also favor stimulation of employment.
The Eagles sponsor the Home on the Range for boys in North Dakota and have contributed more than a million dollars to the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for Cancer Research through activities conducted by local Eagle units.
Officers for 1960-61 are Giulio LePiane, past worthy president; Paul Gilbert, president, Leroy Blake, vice president; George J. Sherwood, secretary; Robert Brumback, treasurer; Leo Marquart, chaplain; Joe Fetter, conductor; Wayne Rumer, inside guard; Fred Powell, Emory Johnston and Lloyd Wise, trustees.
