Montana Flour Mill 80 feet tall in 1901

Landmark for Many Years

 

This flour mill later purchased by the Montana Flour Mills Co., was constructed between South 3rd and 4th streets in the 900 block for W. A. Clark in 1901. Visible for many miles across the Missoula Valley, this 80-foot structure was a landmark for many years until it was destroyed by a spectacular blaze in 1949. (Courtesy of Jack A. and J. W. Dunn)


The above is a caption of a photograph that appeared in the Centennial edition of the Missoulian-Sentinel in 1960. This building was one of the tallest buildings in Missoula when it was built. It does not seem to be identified in many of the old photos of Missoula, and looks out of place.
