Home Demonstration Movement Here Under Way in 1927
The Home Demonstration movement began in Missoula County in 1927 with the organization of the Lolo, Orchard Homes and Potomac clubs. That year the construction of dress forms was the only project.
In 1928 the Daly Addition Club was organized, followed by Clinton in 1930 and Rattlesnake and Hellgate in 1933. The clubs had only one project a year until the arrival of a home demonstration agent when programs included home management and nutrition. In 1935 clothing and home beautification were added to the program.
13th and 13 Limit
The Orchard Homes Club later became known as the Lucky 13 Club. When the club was reorganized it was the 13th club and membership was limited to 13 as the club met in homes which could not accommodate a larger number.
The Home Demonstration Council was organized in September 1933 under the direction of M. M. Oliphant, county agent. Its first president was Mrs. John Schroeder of Lolo.
The Franklin, Potomac, Jumbo, North Side and Nine Mile clubs were organized and after World War II the Rattlesnake, Evaro, Grass Valley, Pine Cone and 4-Corners clubs were organized.
In 1960 there are 25 home demonstration clubs and 374 members in Missoula County. The program includes lessons on table service, family recreation, fabric terms, child care, meat cookery and business facts. Workshops in such arts as upholstering and handicraft lessons which include glove making and leather tooling are held in addition to the regular program.
County home demonstration agents for Missoula County have been Helen Allen, 1936-1940; Lillian Stone, 1940-1941; Helen Kenworthy, 1941-1944; Marjorie Jennings, 1945-1946, 1948-1953; Laverne Olson, 1946-1947; Ann Peterson, 1954-1955; Helen Emblen, 1955-1957 and Jeannette Hiett, 1957 to date.
