Girls of Traffic Department in 1919

This is how the traffic department of the telephone company looked in 1919, eight years before the dial telephone system was started here. All local calls were handled here.

Traffic Department for Long Distance Calls

This photo, taken 40 years after that of the 1919 traffic department, shows the same operation in modern times. The main difference is that these girls are handling long distance calls only, automatic equipment handling all local calls. (Photos courtesy of Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Co.)

Latest Phone Equipment of 1915

J. H. Heydorf (left) wire chief, and L. G. DeLong, plant chief, are shown in 1915 with the latest in telephone equipment of that day.

Modern Equipment Extremely Complex

Modern telephone equipment is as complex as anything in common use. The intermediate distributing frame shown is in sharp contrast to the plant’s equipment of 1915. In the foreground are Richard M. Schneider (left), central office installation foreman, and Robert C. Gilman, central office supervisor.
