William Jennings Bryan in Hamilton
William Jennings Bryan (left) stands with R. A. O’Hara during a visit to Hamilton in 1896. He was brought to western Montana by Marcus Daly to stump for free silver. The Daly coachman is shown at upper left. Hamilton, the town that O’Hara and James Hamilton platted for Daly, was only five years old when the picture was taken by E. O. Hageman. Bryan, unsuccessful candidate for the presidency three times, visited Missoula Aug. 17 of that year, speaking in the courthouse square. All the Missoula business houses closed at 2 p.m., but Bryan’s train arrived at 3:35, more than an hour later than scheduled. (Courtesy of Mrs. W. H. Roberts)
Double-Deck Luxury of Earlier Montana Days
A double-decker outdoor toilet of a bygone day in Montana’s history provides a sharp contrast to the fill, in the left background, of a modern highway. This photo, taken by Ernst C. Peterson of Hamilton, is one of many appearing in the book, “Sittin and a Thinkin’, compiled by Peterson and Glenn Chaffin of Hamilton. (Courtesy of Ernst C. Peterson)
