Initial MHS Graduation Rites in ‘86

The first graduation of record from Missoula High School was in 1886. High school students in those days attended classes in the same building with the grade students on East Main street, later in the Central School building when it was completed in 1888.

These subjects were taught in high school during the 1888-89 year; Ninth grade – higher arithmetic, grammar, physiology, U.S. geography, civil government; 10th grade – algebra, English, botany, Latin; 11th grade – geometry, astronomy, rhetoric, medieval history, geology, ancient history, English literature, modern history.

The high school had its graduation exercises May 20, 1893, in the Opera House. Della Harding and Wilbur Catlin were the graduates. The address to the class was given by President James Reid of the College of Montana and diplomas were presented by S. G. Murray.

Graduates of the class of 1894 were Gertrude Higgins, George Kennett, Maude Honsinger, Sadie Catlin, Alice Hatheway, Ella England, Esther Leiser and George B. Wilds. Graduation exercises again were in the Bennett Opera House on May 19.
