First Church, Union Opera House, Early School Shown in 1890s

The first church constructed in Missoula stands in the lower left center of this view of Missoula taken about the turn of the century. It is the First Methodist Church in the 300 block on East Main street, where its successor stands today. At left, in the 200 block on East Main street, is shown the old Union Opera House. In the background can be seen the old Central School building and to its left the Episcopal Church of that day. (Courtesy of Jack A. Dunn)

Women Joined in Fishing in Early Days

These Missoula residents of the 1890s found fishing in near-by streams a healthful relaxation during the weekends. This group apparently was fishing from a bridge on Lolo Creek on the road to Lolo Hot Springs. Their only worry was a runaway horse as high-speed automobiles were yet in the future when this photo was made. (Courtesy of Jack A. Dunn)
