The Boulevard Effect Was Missing in the 1890s
Picket fences and board sidewalks were the style on East Pine street in the 1890s when this picture was made. Today this street has grass planted in curb-enclosed strips in the center of the thoroughfare to provide one of the most attractive residential sections of the older part of Missoula (Courtesy H. S. Buffaloes Draw Crowds to Old Fairgrounds
The Montana Wild West and Buffalo Show made its initial appearance at the fairgrounds on May 19, 1901, when the fairgrounds was located about where the American Crystal Sugar Co. plant is now west of the city. The show, advertised as “entirely a product of Missoula County,” had as its biggest feature the buffalo chase of an earlier day in which cowboys drove a herd of 25 buffaloes in front of the grandstand with guns popping. An estimated 1,500 persons turned out for the show the first day. (Photo courtesy of Jack A. Dunn)
Judging Sand Witnesses “Gay Ninety” Events
Before this judging stand at the fairgrounds passes ladies racing on bicycles, men throwing hammers and shotputs, running fat men, buffalo, cowboys, jockeys and prize-winning horses. Later a sugar factory was to replace the spice of the “gay ninety” fairgrounds. (Courtesy of Jack A. Dunn)
