First Major School Project

This building constructed on the present site of the Central School served as a high school and a grade school during its early years. It was located north across East Main street from the site of the first schoolhouse in Missoula. The new Central Grade School building was dedicated in 1935.

School Erected in 1891

The North Side or Whittier School was erected in 1891. That year there were 101 grade schoolers enrolled. The new Whittier School building was opened in 1922, and enrollment that year was 337.

Named for Missoula Old-Timer

The East Side or Prescott building was one of two schools constructed in 1891. In 1949 a new Prescott building was constructed. The school is named for Clarence R. Prescott, ex-chief of police, former city marshal, one-time assessor, sheriff, Legislature member and county commissioner, who arrived in Missoula in the 1880s. (School photos courtesy of H. S. Hammond Block One of Larger Building

The great building boom of the early 1890s saw construction of the Hammond Block on the corner of West Front street and Higgins avenue. This building housed the Missoula Drug Co. and other stores on the ground floor and provided offices and rooms for many persons on the second and third floors. It was destroyed by fire Oct. 10, 1932 (Courtesy of H. S. Jewett)
