Fort Troops Leave
Four Companies Depart After Parade to Depot
The four companies and band of the 25th Infantry stationed at Ft. Missoula left the post for Chicamauga, Ga., on April 11, 1898, for use if needed in the nation’s disagreement with Spain over its rule in Cuba.
The troops were moved from Ft. Missoula to South 3rd street on the branch line of the Northern Pacific. From there the band and troops marched east on Third street to Higgins avenue then north through the business district to the NP passenger station.
The citizens of Missoula turned out in force to see the troops, which had been stationed here 10 years, leave for the east. The train of 14 cars, pulled by two “mammoth” engines, left after noon, although it had been scheduled to pull out at 11 a.m.
In the train bearing the four companies were 272 enlisted men, 15 officers, 11 women and 17 children, wives and families of the officers, making a total of 315.
Remaining at the fort were Lt. and Mrs. Shattuck and Lt. and Mrs. Pardee, the former to turn over the property to the garrison commander, and the latter on a month’s leave.
