Harvey C. Hackman Photos on Page 16

Two interesting photographs appear on Page 16 of Section A. While reproducing them here is not yet possible, the captions under the photos have some value regarding Missoula’s history.

These photos and many others in this edition are courtesy of Harvey C. Hackman. He was responsible for gathering and saving many of the early photos of Missoula that exist today.

The first photo on this page is of the early N. P. Hospital in Missoula. The caption states the following:

Second Hospital Starts in Early 1880s

Eleven years after Missoula’s first hospital got its start, the Northern Pacific Beneficial Association in 1884 opened this hospital on the North Side. This building burned in 1892 and another was started the same year. The present brick structure was constructed in 1917. Second from left on horseback is Mrs. J. J. Buckley, wife of Dr. Buckley who was chief surgeon from 1888 to 1903. Fourth from left on horseback is their daughter, Bess.

The second photo on this page is of a large group of men standing in front of the bank on the NE corner of Higgins and Main streets:

Eighth Annual Encampment Conducted in Missoula

This photo taken at the corner of Higgins and Main shows those who attended the eighth annual encampment of the Montana Department of the Grand Army of the Republic in Missoula in May of 1892. The Montana Department was organized in 1885 in Helena. Capt. Thomas P. Fuller of Helena was the first department commander. Other commanders to follow in those early years of the organization were Gen. Charles S. Warren, Ela C. Waters, Junius G. Sanders, James C. Calloway, E. D. Ferris and H. C. Kessler, commander in 1892.

Approximately 150 delegates attended the three-day meeting. On the encampment committees were: Arrangements – John B. Catlin, V. A. Clark and Charles Felton, decorations – Ralph Simpson, W. H. H. Dickinson and John Copp; music – J. M. Hamilton and Ralph Simpson; finance – Dickinson, W. E. Bancroft and the Rev. Hugh Lamont. Great Fall was selected as site of the 1892 meeting.
