A Glimpse of the Birth of Missoula – 1865

A Glimpse of the Birth of Missoula – “New Town is being built” – 1865

At Hell Gate the crops are as good as usual, and the prices for produce are high. Oats, 10c per pound, wheat 8c per pound, potatoes 6c, onions 20c, per pound. A new town is being built near the mouth of Rattlesnake creek, five miles above the site of Hell Gate, and will probably be the town of the Hell Gate valley. A grist and saw mill are in course of completion at that place. The improvements in the mills at Hell Gate and Ft. Owens will enable the Hell Gaters to supply as good an article of flour as that furnished by Salt Lake, which commands at present 25 cents per pound in Helena and Blackfoot City. [W. W. Statesman.

Scarcity of Supplies. – Private letters received from Montana [spelled with a tilde over the 2nd n], express the opinion that supplies will be very scarce before the opening of the Spring trade High prices are expected to prevail, and those who are fortunate enough to get their stock in early will be sure to have a good thing. Until late in the season it will be impossible to get in supplies from the East, and as a consequence the people of Montana look to this quarter as their main dependence. – [Walla Wall Statesman.
