Missoula’s Deadly Garbage – 1903

City Will Have A New Dump

Napoleon Reeves Complains to the Council That He Has Lost Three Cows.

Missoula, July 14. – The city is to have a new dump for its garbage. Napoleon Reeves appeared before the council on Monday evening with a very just complaint. Reeves has a herd of cattle in the vicinity of the present dump, and has lost three cows now as a result of their wandering into the city’s corral and overeating. Sunday night he lost a $50 cow. He brought the matter before the alderman and the street and alley committee was authorized to look up a more suitable place for a city dump and have it inclosed so that straying cattle may not be able to eat themselves to death on the garbage that finds its way to it.

The above article appeared in The Anaconda Standard on July 15, 1903.

Another article regarding Missoula’s garbage appeared in the same day’s newspaper:

City Will Get Along Without A Crematory

Missoula, July 14. – Mayor Smith on Monday evening asked the council for an opinion concerning the purchase of a city crematory for the burning of garbage. Alderman Gerber was of the opinion that the establishment of one would be too expensive, and Alderman Pringle said that it would need the presence of one man with it all the time to keep the fires going and that last year’s council had considered the matter of purchasing a crematory at one time, but had given it up because of the expense attached. The city will get along without a crematory for the present, judging from the expressions of council members.
