State University’s First Chinese Graduate to Take Public Office
Ching Han Chen, the first Chinese student to be graduated from the University of Montana, completed his work at the institution Monday afternoon and is now waiting only for his diploma before starting upon his return trip to his home in the Orient. Mr. Chen expects to leave Missoula sometime in the early part of next week. He will go from here directly to Washington, D. C., where he will spend several months in a thorough investigation of the different departments of the government of the United States. Mr. Chen will give particular attention to the methods of conducting the department of the treasury. He will be granted exceptional freedom in his study in Washington; this special privilege is the result of a request made by the Chinese government, asking that Mr. Chen be made familiar with the methods of conducting this nation’s business.
To Chinese Treasury.
From Washington, Mr. Chen will go to China by way of the Panama canal. Upon his arrival in China he will at once enter the treasury department of that country. It was for work of this nature that Chen prepared himself in colleges of this country which he has attended.
Mr. Chen entered the University of Montana in September, 1915. He has specialized in the department of business administration and has earned the full number of credits required for the bachelor’s degree. His work has been high class; he is a cultured man and a diligent student. He spent last summer in familiarizing himself with the details of farming methods in western Montana, working as a farm hand during the haying season. He will receive the bachelor of science degree.
